Allen Schubert

My name is Allen Schubert.  On July 18, 2002, at 19 years old, I fell 26 feet and shattered the L1 vertebra in my back leaving me paralyzed from the waist down.  I also shattered the radial head in my right elbow.  The doctors told me I would never walk again and have very little movement of my right arm.  I spent 3 months inpatient at Touro Rehabilitation Hospital in New Orleans Louisiana.  From there I went through about two years of intense outpatient physical therapy.  It was approximately 3 weeks before I was able to move my legs.  I started walking with a platform walker and a lot of assistance about a month after my accident.  I eventually progressed to loft strand crutches then to two single point canes.  About a year and a half after my accident I progressed to one single point cane.  I have to wear AFO's on my ankles when I walk.  It has taken a lot of FAITH and determination to get where I am today.  My family has been by me every step of the way, literally.  They have been by my side giving me all the support anyone could ever ask for.
